Tutorial: cotton tape cardigan using double crochet rib stitch

Fancy making a cardigan using cotton tapes? Then, look no further, just follow this pattern made using the new yarn, Sailorman. It is in fact a tape, but its roundness makes it very different to its big sister, our Stromboli tape. It really reminds us of the ropes that they use on boats (hence the name). Basically, two tapes almost at odds with one another. One is dainty and cozy, the other has more of a spring in its step and is sporty and dynamic.

So, to bring out their two different personalities we’ve worked on two very different colours. Stromboli has softer, pastel colours while Sailorman has more energetic vivacious colours.

Similarly, you can see this influence in the project we’re going to present to you. An open sporty cardigan but as you can see totally feminine.

How to make the back of the cotton tape cardigan

Cast on 80 chain stitches with 2 rows and crochet hook n° 4.5 EU / 7US working the embossed double crochet for 4 rows.

Then continue with crochet hook n° 5 EU / H-8 US for a total of 30 rows. Put the stitch marker on each side to mark the start of the armholes.

Now work the armholes, increasing 1 on each side in the first and the last stitch of the previous row for 13 rows, for a total of 106 stitches.
Row 48: knit without increasing the stitches.

Now it’s time to do the shoulder slope: above the first 5 double crochet stitches knit 1 slip stitch. Then carry on working double crochet for 96 stitches, flip the work over and repeat the lowering of the previous row.
Carry on decreasing this way until you have 34 stitches left.

How to make the front of the cotton tape cardigan

Cast on 44 chain stitches with 2 rows and crochet hook n° 4.5 EU / 7US working the embossed double crochet for 4 rows. Then continue with crochet hook n° 5 EU / H-8 US for a total of 26 rows.

Start shaping the neck:
row 31: *stitch 2 together, continue with double crochet until the end of the row
row 32: double crochet, closing with the last 2 together *
Repeat from * to * alternating a row with double crochet and one where you decrease the neckline (2 together). Simultaneously working the arm hole and shoulder slope as the back.

Sew the shoulders.

How to make the sleeves of the cotton tape cardigan

Pick up the stitches at the stitch marker, 29 stitches on the front and 29 on the back for a total of 58 stitches.
Work for 20 rows.

Change the crochet hook to n° 4.5 EU / 7 US for the cuff.

The three initial chain stitches are double crotched so work the next 2 double crochet stitches into the 2 of the ones from the previous row, closing them to end up with just one stitch (basically a decrease). At the end of the row we’ll have 30 stitches.

Double crochet for another 3 rows.
Bind off.

How to make the pockets of the cotton tape cardigan

Using crochet hook n° 7 EU /H-8 US cast on 26 chain stitches and work double crochet rib stitch for 10 rows.
Sew the pockets onto the body of the cardigan.

Making up

Sew the pieces together and make up the front and neckline with one row of single crochet.
Flip the work over and finish off with a row of slip stitch.

And there you have it, your cardigan’s ready! We hope that whoever wears it, gets that burst of energy that we do… LA VIE EN ROSE!
