Piuma is a pure merino wool roving with a soft, slightly hairy texture and a compact structure that makes it surprisingly easy to work. The light twist preserves all the natural softness and lightness of merino fiber, while during working the yarn tends to swell, gaining volume and body. Suitable for needlepoint, crochet, handweaving, needlepunch and tufting, Piuma is one of the most versatile yarns around. The result, whichever technique you choose? Warm, cozy, irresistibly cozy-looking garments and crafts.
The “I dyed by hand” collection was created by Dark Omen Yarn, which used the hand-dyeing technique to create a unique and unrepeatable variety of colors. Therefore, each skein may be slightly different from the other while remaining the same color nuance. Each particularity is to be considered a merit because it is handcrafted and unique.

Piuma is entirely made in Prato, one of the world's most prestigious textile districts, starting from our extra fine merino wool tops — a 100% wool combed sliver with a micron count of approximately 19 microns, ensuring exceptional softness against the skin. The raw material comes from selected farms in South America, particularly from Argentina, Uruguay, and Chile: regions with a long tradition in sheep farming and high quality standards in textile fiber production.
From raw fiber to finished yarn, the entire process takes place in Italy: a short and controlled supply chain that combines the quality of South American raw materials with Tuscan artisan expertise.
Our merino wool is mulesing-free, meaning it comes from farms that do not practice mulesing, a surgical procedure used in some parts of the world to prevent parasitic infestations in sheep. The choice to use wool from supply chains that exclude this practice reflects our commitment to animal welfare and more responsible farm management.
Our Piuma wool yarn is worked with fairly large needles and hooks, from 5.5 mm upwards.
With needles: it's perfect for stockinette stitch and all other techniques, both textured and lace. Keep in mind, however, that the yarn, being chunky, requires textured patterns to be distributed evenly across the surface to avoid making it too heavy and creating asymmetries.
With a hook: single crochet ensures a compact result. You can also work all other stitches.
Tips for working and care.
Pure wool rovings have little to no twist, and with the first washes they tend to compact slightly — this is not felting, but a natural settling of the fiber. If this is your first time working with this type of yarn, we recommend making a small test swatch and washing it by hand in cold water, or even better, dry cleaning it. This step is particularly important if you intend to work Piuma with large needles or with lace and very open stitches: the swatch will allow you to calibrate needles and measurements precisely.
