CARDED BERGSCHAF WOOL MIX

Code 8557

Carded Bergschaf wool mix – sustainable creativity.
Rehab breathes new life into quality fibers and yarns, transforming scraps and leftovers into sustainable, creative materials ready to inspire your craft projects.

$9.74

Bergschaf’s carded wool blends are composed of selected fibers from our own production, often derived from processing waste or stock.

Buying these materials means making a sustainable choice, but you should also be aware that these packages have some limitations since the colors available vary according to production and the color assortment is limited nor is it possible to select color combinations within the package. However, we guarantee you that there are at least 2 different color shades inside. This approach not only contributes to waste reduction but also provides an opportunity to explore new creative and sustainable combinations. And that is why these materials are part of our DHG Rehab selection because they are fibers that are given a second life but have the high quality and characteristics of fibers in the collection and are perfect for felting, weaving, and hand spinning.

Availability and packaging
This item is available in 500 g. Each package has a natural tolerance of ±3%.
For non-ECE shipments, packages are vacuum-packed, reducing volume and lowering shipping costs. Don’t worry: once opened, the wool returns to its original, fluffy volume with no loss of quality.

Vegetable impurities
These types of carded wools go through several steps in production. They range from carbonizing to washing, dyeing, and carding. However, it is not possible to completely eliminate vegetable impurities, which should be regarded as an inherent characteristic and not a quality defect of the product.

Carded wool bergschaf.
Composition: 100% wool
Microning: approx. 33 microns.

Carded wools are made through a carding process, in which the fibers are disentangled and partially aligned, but not completely sorted as is the case with worsted tops. Carding opens and separates the fibers while retaining many of the shorter fibers and creating a softer, more airy and voluminous texture than combed wool.
For this reason, carded wools are often preferred for techniques such as:

  • needle felting or water felting, because the irregular arrangement of fibers promotes hooking and compaction;
  • fiber arts and batts, where the soft and light texture is an added value;
  • projects that require more thermal insulation or volume, as air trapped between the carded fibers imparts warmth and softness.

Compared to combed tops-where the fibers are carefully aligned and short staples are removed to create a more uniform and regular yarn- carded wool has a fuzzier, less compact and often more "rustic" texture.

Bergschaf wool is derived from alpine sheep native to the Tyrol area, between TyrolAustria, Germany and Switzerland. It is a breed developed by crossing local mountain sheep with the Italian Bergschaf breed, with a long pastoral tradition in Alpine areas.

These sheep are raised in mountainous and climatically severe environments, with seasonal grazing and transhumance:

  • summer in the mountains
  • winter in the barn
This style of breeding selects extremely hardy and adaptable animals.

Thus, wool is structurally robust, functional, and oriented toward durability rather than finesse.

The wool comes from European farms where the practice of mulesing is not used.

The dyes used for our products meet the requirements of the OEKO-TEX standard, which guarantees the control and limitation of substances potentially harmful to human health and the environment.
Fiber dyeing is carried out in our dyehouse in Italy, in compliance with current European regulations on chemicals and environmental safety, including the REACH Regulation (EC No. 1907/2006), which governs the registration, evaluation, authorization and restriction of chemical substances.
Operating within the European Union also entails compliance with additional provisions on environmental protection and textile product safety, such as the CLP Regulation (EC No. 1272/2008), relating to the classification, labeling and packaging of substances and mixtures. This regulatory framework ensures that dyeing processes are conducted according to high standards of safety, traceability and environmental responsibility, offering a reliable product for both the end user and the environment.

Our carded bergschaf wool is perfect for theneedle felting, forwater felting, for spinning.

Bergschaf is often called one of the quintessential "working" wools in felt.

Main reasons:

  1. Feltra easily
  2. Keeps shape
  3. Resists wear and tear
  4. Does not collapse easily

It is particularly suitable for objects that must endure heavy use, such as:

  • bags
  • slippers
  • rugs
  • structural objects

The fiber produces a stable and durable felt suitable for products under high stress.

Since colors may vary depending on your monitor or device settings, we recommend purchasing our Color Card to check the shades in person before placing your final order. Want to check the quality of the material? Choose our Sample Box.

CAUTION: All of our colors generally exhibit high lightfastness and wash fastness. However, fluorescent colors (80's collection), in addition to having a lower lightfastness, may also suffer significant color loss in the presence of alkaline or particularly aggressive soaps, as well as with prolonged processing or washing. This phenomenon can occur, to varying degrees, even with dark and particularly bright colors. For materials dyed with these shades, we always recommend that a preliminary processing and washing test be carried out on a small sample before making the final design. This precaution is essential, especially when dyed materials are combined with unbleached or light-colored fibers.
Finally, to best preserve the colors, it is recommended that artifacts not be dried in direct sunlight, but in a shady place.
