How to knit a kid's vest with mosaic knitting

Today we'll learn how to make a vest for kids – ages 7-8 – using the mosaic knitting technique. This method allows you to create sweaters, scarves, and blankets with two or more colors that form geometric patterns on the item. We've decided to show you two different versions with different color schemes to inspire you and show that the color combinations are endless!

INSTRUCTIONS

The garment is worked flat in two pieces: a back and a front. The neckband and armhole borders are worked after seaming.

How to make the back of the mosaic knitted kid's vest

With knitting needles size n° 4.5 EU / 7 US and Color 1, cast on 61 stitches.

Row 1: knit 1, repeat (purl 1, knit 1) to the end of the row
row 2: purl 1, repeat (knit 1, purl 1) to the end of the row.

Rows 1 and 2 set the 1x1 rib. Repeat them 3 more times until you reach Row 8, which should measure 3.5 cm / 1.4". Change to Color 2 and work in stockinette stitch for 58 rows, up to Row 66. Change again to Color 3 and work in stockinette stitch for another 10 rows until you reach Row 76, measuring 34.5 cm / 13.6".

Row 77: knit the first 21 stitches, bind off the next 19 stitches for the neckline, knit the remaining 21 stitches
row 78: purl the stitches of the second side. Now, continue working only on this second side, placing the stitches of the first side on a stitch holder
row 79: decrease 1 stitch for the neckline by working a slip, knit, pass over (SKP) on the first 2 stitches, continue in knit stitch to the end of the row
row 80: purl. Bind off.

Resume working on the stitches of the first side and work as for the second side, but mirrored.


How to make the front of the mosaic knitted kid's vest

With knitting needles size n° 4.5 EU / 7 US and Color 3, cast on 61 stitches and work 8 rows in 1x1 rib as explained for the back. Change to Color 4 and work in stockinette stitch for 58 rows, up to Row 66.

Row 67: knit the first 24 stitches, bind off the next 13 stitches for the neckline, knit the remaining 24 stitches
row 68: purl the stitches of the second side. Now, continue working only on this second side, placing the stitches of the first side on a stitch holder
row 69: decrease 1 stitch for the neckline by working a slip, knit, pass over (SKP) on the first 2 stitches, continue in knit stitch to the end of the row
row 70: purl
rows 71 and 72: work as Rows 69 and 70. Change to Color 3
rows 73 and 74: work as Rows 69 and 70
row 75: knit
row 76: purl
rows 77 and 78: work as Rows 69 and 70
rows 79 and 80: work as Rows 75 and 76. Bind off.

Resume working on the stitches of the first side, work as for the second side but mirrored, and change to Color 3 at the end of Row 68.


How to finish the kid's vest

Sew the seams, matching the colors of the yarn. Sew one shoulder. For the neck, with knitting needles size n° 4.5 EU / 7 US and Color 1, pick up an even number of stitches around the neckline and work in 1x1 rib for 12 rows. Bind off. Sew the other shoulder and the neckband. Sew the side seams for 22 cm / 8.7" from the bottom: the upper 14 cm / 5.5" remain open for the armholes. For the armhole borders, starting and ending at the side seam, with knitting needles size n° 4.5 EU / 7 US and Color 3, pick up an even number of stitches around the armhole and work in 1x1 rib for 6 rows. Bind off. Sew the armhole borders.
