Today we’re going to learn how to make a pair of accessories—a scarf and a hat—to brighten up the gray winter days. Both projects are also perfect for beginners.
The stitch used to create the pattern is a variation of the double crochet, worked around the previous double crochets. For those new to crochet, it’s recommended to start with the hat, as it’s quicker to finish, giving you immediate satisfaction!

row 1: 3 chain stitches (equivalent to 1 double crochet), continue with double crochet until the end of the row, turn the work
row 2: 3 chain stitches (equivalent to 1 double crochet), 1 double crochet in the next stitch, repeat (skip 2 stitches, 1 double crochet in the next 2 stitches, 1 double crochet in the first of the skipped stitches, passing behind the worked stitches, 1 double crochet in the second of the skipped stitches, passing behind the worked stitches) until the last 2 stitches, 1 double crochet in the last 2 stitches, turn the work.
Repeat rows 1 and 2: If working in the round, since row 2 is done on the right side, remember to pass in front of the worked stitches rather than behind when crocheting the double crochets in the skipped stitches.

SCARF METHOD
Using a crochet hook n° 5 EU / H-8 US, chain 32 stitches and work in cross-stitch for 76 rows, then work 1 row of double crochet. Cut and fasten off the yarn.
HAT METHOD
The hat is worked in the round, from top to bottom, and has no seams. Replace the first stitch of each round of double crochet / cross-stitch with 3 chain stitches, and each round of single crochet with 1 chain stitch. Close the rounds with a slip stitch worked into the 3rd chain of the beginning for double crochet / cross-stitch rounds, and into the beginning chain stitch for single crochet rounds.
Using a crochet hook n° 5 EU / H-8 US, chain 5 stitches and join with a slip stitch to form a ring.
Round 1: work 10 double crochets into the starting chain
round 2: work 2 double crochets into each stitch around; you should have 20 stitches
round 3: repeat (1 double crochet in the next stitch, 2 double crochets in the next stitch) to the end of the round; you should have 30 stitches
round 4: repeat (1 double crochet in the next 2 stitches, 2 double crochets in the next stitch) to the end of the round; you should have 40 stitches
round 5: repeat (skip the next 2 stitches, 2 double crochets in the next stitch, 1 double crochet in the first skipped stitch, passing in front of the worked stitches, 1 double crochet in the second skipped stitch, passing in front of the worked stitches) to the last stitch, 2 double crochets in the last stitch; you should have 13 cross-stitch motifs and 2 double crochets
round 6: repeat (1 double crochet in the next 17 stitches, 2 double crochets in the next stitch) twice, then work 1 double crochet in the last 18 stitches; you should have 56 stitches
round 7: work in double crochet
round 8: repeat (skip the next 2 stitches, 1 double crochet in the next 2 stitches, 1 double crochet in the first skipped stitch, passing in front of the worked stitches, 1 double crochet in the second skipped stitch, passing behind the worked stitches) to the end of the round; you should have 14 cross-stitch motifs
rounds 9 and 10: work in double crochet
round 11: work as in Round 8
round 12: work in double crochet
rounds 13 and 14: work in single crochet
round 15: work in crab stitch.
Cut and fasten off the yarn.
