I love shawls and picnics. That’s why when I started thinking about a piece to make with the brand new Sierra Yarn I thought of a shawl, which if need be, could also be used as a blanket to lie on the grass.
Autumn is just around the corner and I can’t think of a better way to spend my weekends than laying on a lawn, unwinding and looking at the stunning colours of the trees.
And above all it’s unisex. With houses getting smaller and less money to spend, I think unisex items are a great solution. Don’t you think?
Now let’s get started!

KNIT-CROCHET STITCHES USED
Stockinette rib slip stitch 1x1
Rib stitch 1x1 purling and go ahead without knit stitching but moving the thread.
Stockinette stitch
This is by alternating a knit row on the odd rows and a purl one on the even rows.
Single crochet
Single crochet horizontal
Work as the single crochet but insert the hook in the horizontal windows that you find at the front.
Single crochet ribbing
Work as the single crochet horizontal but insert the hook only into the yarn at the rear of the foundation row.
Useful tips
With the stockinette stitch never work the first stitch, which is only passed on the right needle and always knit stitch the last one. This will result in a neat and linear selvedge. When working the lines, leave the yarn long at the end of a colour change. You will use it later to make the fringes.

Twisted string fringes
Wrap the yarn around a piece of card 15 cm/5.9" in length and then cut the threads from one side only to obtain a bundle of threads of 30 cm/11.8" in length.
Put them in twos, fold them in half and put them in correspondence to the threads, matching the colours.
Insert the hook into the loop, gather the bunch of threads and pass through it, pull and tighten.
Pair them up 2 by 2 and twist them. Those in your left hand towards the right and those in your right hand towards the left. Then twist them so they tighten around themselves.
Secure with a double knot and tidy up the last part with scissors.
The shawl is finished, so prepare that picnic basket, a book and put on your sunglasses! You’re now ready to enjoy Autumn which is now just around the corner.
