Tutorial to make a bear with needle felting

Needle felting is a perfect technique for anyone looking to explore the fun and creativity of working with wool. Getting started is easy, as it’s quick to learn and requires just a few essentials: a generous handful of fibers—whether animal or plant-based—along with a felting needle and a base.

You can begin with a simple desire to try something new and may even find yourself becoming a true fiber artist, much like Yu-Ching Lin | Leyan. Originally from Taiwan, Yu-Ching is now a renowned needle-felting artist and teacher who splits her time between her hometown and Paris.

Yu-Ching has become a dear friend to us. She loves working with our fibers, and we absolutely adore her style—playful, tender, and marked by clean yet flawless forms.

Last summer, she spent a couple of days with us, and we had the privilege of watching her create. It felt like stepping into another realm—one of meditation and creation—where Yu-Ching’s slow yet deliberate movements brought her three-dimensional pieces to life with a mesmerizing grace.

During her visit, she crafted this delightful acrobat bear balancing on a ball using our exclusive New Zealand wool blend. Isn’t it stunning? You can watch the entire creative process on our YouTube channel.

Now, we invite you to learn more about this incredible fiber artist, who shared a bit of her story with us. We’re certain you’ll fall in love with her work, just like we did.

Coming from Taiwan, I came across the art of wool-felt by chance, and I have been diving into the path of poking and prodding wool-felt ever since. I published three wool-felt educational books and have been organizing workshops in Taiwan, Japan and France for the public, companies, and organizations. In 2015, I started my own brand - “Leyan”.

My creations are always inspired by nature and the animal world. I admire nature (somehow I enjoy watching nature disaster movies, it makes me reflect on the importance of valuing nature.)

I always look to enhance my creations and keep experimenting new ways .When ideas pop into my head, I will make an all-out effort to make it real. The sense of accomplishment I feel when I finish my projects gives me the motivation to continue creating. Apart from wool-felt, I also love photography and appreciating beautiful things. Photography not only helps me to capture the beautiful moments of my travels, the colorful skies, and the places I’ve visited, but also documents and allows me to share my creative process. The moment when I take a stunning photo of my creation, which makes me feel a sense of fulfillment.

I love traveling and experiencing life in a different way. And now, my journey is continuing in Paris, the daily life here, the museums, the food, the croissants, all of them come to my creation. I hope that my creations could bring warm feelings and happiness to everyone.
