Tutorial: how to make a felt Christmas bauble

Today we are going to learn how to make an easy decoration to hang on the Christmas tree. We are referring to baubles made using felt ribbons. Simple but eye-catching, they have the particularity of being stout, yet at the same time light, due to the full and empty spaces created by the ribbons. They were designed as tree ornaments but in our opinion are also perfect as place cards at the table. Need a great gift idea? Have fun making some for your friends, it will be an original and highly appreciated gift! And every time they hang the baubles upon their tree a thought and a memory will flash across their mind.

Let's get going.

METHOD

For this quick and easy project, we suggest you select a colour combination that speaks to you, as you can make the ball in multiple colour combinations or simply in one colour.

The first step is to cut 22cm / 8.7" of felt tape that will serve as a starting point and since you are cutting the first colour, we recommend that you also cut two 16cm / 6.3" strips of felt. Now it’s time to switch colour, cut two 12.5cm / 4.9" strips and then two more 18cm / 7.1" strips.

At this stage take the longest strip and on the right edge of the ribbon apply some hot glue, then cut a piece of wire half the length of the ribbon and place it in the middle of the ribbon where you put the hot glue.

Before the glue cools, fold the remaining free part of the ribbon back on itself. Let the hot glue cool and to ensure that the two parts of the felt adhere properly, place an object on the felt to weigh it down.

Now take the first 12.5 cm / 4.9" strip and with hot glue fix the two ends on one side of the base you recently created. Be sure to make the glue adhere well and wait for the two parts to be firm before moving on to the next step.

Cut a length of leather cord to be used later to attach the ball to the tree. Cut off as much as you need to achieve the desired effect.

At this point, attach a string cord to one of the two ends of the second strip that you just finished attaching. Using the hot glue, fix the cord with the 16cm / 6.3" felt strip.

Once this strip is also secure, you can proceed to attaching the last 18cm / 7.1" strip.

Now that one half of the Christmas bauble has been completed, you can start work on the second half of the bauble, repeating the steps followed up to now.
