How to knit a bicolor sweater

A stylish bicolor sweater with three-quarter sleeves, an oversized fit, and a cute little pocket for an extra touch of elegance. That’s the free pattern we’re offering today! But what truly makes this sweater special is the yarn we’ve chosen: Hygge—a perfect blend of softness and beauty. This yarn combines Tencel, the most sustainable fiber in the world, with luxurious and ultra-warm alpaca wool. Plus, Hygge is crafted with a slight bouclé effect, giving it a rich texture that’s perfect for those who love the look of faux fur but also care about animal welfare.

Wearing this sweater will feel like a cozy hug for your skin.

Now, let’s get knitting! But first, head over to our shop and pick your favorite Hygge color combination.

INSTRUCTIONS

The sweater is worked flat and consists of four pieces: back, front, and sleeves. The neckline border is added after sewing three of the four raglan seams.

How to knit the back of the bicolor sweater

With knitting needles n° 4 EU / 6 US needles and color Suk, cast on 115 (123, 127) stitches.

Row 1: (knit 1, purl 1) repeat until the last stitch, knit 1
row 2: purl 1, (knit 1, purl 1) repeat to the end of the row.

These two rows create the 1x1 rib for the bottom edge. Repeat them 6 more times until you reach row 14 (4 cm / 1.6").

Continue in stockinette stitch for 34 rows, then switch to color Fiore and knit another 54 (56, 58) rows. At row 102 (104, 106), your work should measure approximately 37 (38, 39) cm / 14.6" (15", 15.4").

For convenience, renumber the rows from Row 1.

Row 1: bind off 8 (10, 9) stitches for the armhole, knit to the end
row 2: bind off 8 (10, 9) stitches for the armhole, purl to the end
row 3: knit 2, decrease 1 stitch for the raglan shaping by working an SKP decrease, knit to the last 4 stitches, decrease 1 stitch by knitting 2 stitches together, knit 2
row 4: purl.

These rows set the raglan decreases at the edges. Repeat rows 3 and 4 for another 24 (25, 27) times. After row 52 (54, 58), your work should measure 19 (20, 22) cm / 7.5" (8", 8.7") from the start of the raglan shaping, leaving 49 (51, 53) stitches on the needle. Bind off all stitches.

How to knit the front of the sweater

With knitting needles n° 4 EU / 6 US and color Suk, cast on 115 (123, 127) stitches.

Continue in stockinette stitch for 30 rows, reaching row 44.

Row 45: knit
row 46: purl the first 15 (15, 17) stitches, place the next 23 (23, 25) stitches on a stitch holder for the pocket opening, purl to the end.

Now, set aside the front piece and knit the pocket lining.

Using another pair of knitting needles n° 4 EU / 6 US, take the held stitches and knit in stockinette stitch, keeping 1 selvedge stitch at the beginning and end of each row. Work 84 (84, 90) rows, reaching approximately 32 (32, 34) cm / 12.6" (12.6", 13.4"). Leave the stitches on hold.

Go back to the front piece and attach the pocket:

row 47: knit to the pocket stitches, align the pocket lining so that it sits parallel to the row in progress, knit across the held stitches from the pocket lining (this will position the pocket on the wrong side), then knit the remaining front stitches
row 48: purl.

Switch to color Flower from row 49 onward and work exactly as for the back, including raglan decreases. Bind off all stitches.

How to knit the sleeves

Start with the right sleeve.

With knitting needles n° 4 EU / 6 US and color Flower, cast on 94 (100, 100) stitches.

Row 1: (purl 1, knit 1) repeat to the end
rows 2–16: repeat Row 1. (This completes the 1x1 rib).

Switch to stockinette stitch and knit for 54 (54, 52) rows, reaching row 70 (70, 68) (approx. 25 (25, 24) cm / 9.8" (9.8", 9.4")).

For convenience, renumber the rows from Row 1.

Row 1: bind off 8 (10, 9) stitches for the armhole, knit to the end
row 2: bind off 8 (10, 9) stitches for the armhole, purl to the end
row 3: knit 2, decrease 1 stitch for the raglan shaping using an SKP decrease, knit to the last 4 stitches, decrease 1 stitch by knitting 2 stitches together, knit 2
row 4: purl.

These rows establish the raglan decreases. Repeat rows 3 and 4 for another 23 (24, 25) times, then knit 2 (2, 4) more rows in stockinette stitch without decreases.

At row 52 (54, 58), your work should measure 19 (20, 22) cm / 7.5" (8", 8.7") from the start of the raglan shaping, with 30 stitches remaining. Bind off all stitches.

Work the left sleeve as for the right sleeve, but mirror the shaping.

Finishing the bicolor sweater

Sew the seams matching the colors of the yarn. Sew three of the four raglan seams.

Neckline border: with knitting needles n° 4 EU / 6 US, pick up stitches evenly along the front and back necklines. The final number of stitches must be even. Work 4 rows of 1x1 rib, then bind off all stitches. Sew the last raglan seam and the neckline border. Sew the underarm and side seams.

Close the pocket lining by stitching the sides together.
