If you are like us and find granny squares irresistible and always in fashion, then you will love our Iconic Granny sweater! But before getting started with the pattern let's say a few words about how these queens of crochet are born.
Some say they appeared for the first time in London others claim instead that they are product of pioneers from the West. It matters little, the common factor of these two versions of events is that the granny (grandmother's) squares are born from an important need: to not waste the leftover yarns that inevitably accumulate at the completion of each project. These squares, in fact, are made from many different motifs, and are perfect for using different coloured yarns. Furthermore, they have had a long life until today also for another reason: when assembled they can be utilised in the creation of blankets, scarves, doilies, bags, sweaters and just about anything that takes your fancy.
Our Iconic Granny sweater was made using Cleopatra yarn, in cotton and linen, which, as it turns out, is perfect for obtaining the consistent texture needed to have the stiff effect we were looking for. The sweater is truly splendid, and only with our Cleopatra can we guarantee the same result.
And now it's time for you to give it a go!

METHOD
The sweater is made up of 63 squares and 2 half squares.
We carry out alternating and changing colour at each round. The last round must always be crocheted using black.
Cast on 4 chains. Close in a circle.
Row 1: in the resulting circle crochet * 3 double crochets, 2 chains*, repeat from * to * 4 times in total
row 2: in the chains of the underlying round crochet * 3 double crochets, 3 chains, 3 double crochets, in each arch. As a result, the corners will have been formed
row 3: change colour * in each corner crochet 3 double crochets, 3 chains, 3 double crochets, 2 chains. In the next arch crochet 3 double crochets, 2 chains *, repeat from * to * for the whole round
row 4: change colour * in each corner crochet 3 double crochets, 3 chains, 3 double crochets, 2 chains. In the next 3 arches work 3 double crochets and 2 chains
row 5: always using black * in each corner crochet 3 double crochets, 3 chains, 3 double crochets, 2 chains. In the next 3 arches, work 3 double crochets, 2 chains*, repeat from * to * for the whole round.
Stop the thread.
Crochet 4 chains and close in a circle.
The procedure is the same as that of the full square, however, you have to concentrate on crocheting just on two sides and 1 corner. The work always starts on the same side.
Row 1: *crochet 3 double crochets and 2 chains*, repeat from * to * 2 times in total. Cut the thread
row 2: change colour * work 3 double crochets on the first double crochet of the previous round, 2 chains, work the corner in the arch below, * 3 double crochet, 3 chains*. Crochet 2 chains and 3 double crochets on the third double crochet of the group below
row 3: change colour * work 3 double crochets on the first double crochet of the previous round, 2 chains, 3 double crochets in the arch below crochet the corner, * 3 double crochets, 3 chains*. Crochet 2 chains, 3 double crochets, 2 chains and 3 double crochets on the third double crochet of the group below
row 4: change colour * work 3 double crochets on the first double crochet of the previous round, 2 chains, 3 double crochets in the arch below, 3 double crochets in the following arch. Crochet the corner, * 3 double crochets, 3 chains*. Work 2 chains, 3 double crochets, 2 chains, 3 double crochets, 2 chains and 3 double crochets on the third double crochet of the group below.
row 5: take the black yarn * work 3 double crochets on the first double crochet of the previous round, 2 chains, 3 double crochets in the arch below, 3 double crochets in the following arch and 3 more double crochets, 2 chains. Crochet the corner, * 3 double crochets, 3 chains*. Work 2 chains, 3 double crochets, 2 chains, 3 double crochets, 2 chains, 3 double crochets and 2 chains and finish with 3 double crochets on the third double crochet of the group below.
Stop the thread.
Before starting to join the tiles together you have to hide and cut the threads.
You need to sew 5 squares together by 5 rows to create a large square. Add a square on each side to form the neckline. The 2 half tiles are sewn inside these two tiles to form the neckline.
Sew 5 tiles together by 5 rows and close the shoulders.
Then close the sides that correspond to 3 rows of tiles, the opening is used for the sleeve excavation.
For the sleeves sew 4 tiles in the round for 2 rows, then sew the sleeves to the body of the sweater.
Finally finish the neckline with a round of single crochet.
