How to make a crochet bag with flowers

Crochet experienced a sort of golden age in the 1960s, when this technique, which was born in the 1800s as we know it today, found new life. Many people fell in love with crochet works, even in the world of fashion. This led to the green light for crochet garments like sweaters, hats, dresses, and even bags. All in true hippie style.

The bag we're offering with this pattern is a crochet bag that truly evokes the 1960s. Made of flowers, one next to the other, just like a real flower field!

The chosen yarn is Baratti, a 100% cotton yarn available in solid colors or in the mouliné version. Baratti is also perfect for hand spinning.

Have fun!

METHOD

The bag is made of 54 flower modules and 12 half-flower modules, worked separately and then joined together to form a single rectangular panel, which is closed at the bottom and sides.

For the first flower module, with crochet hook size 6 EU / J-10 US, start with 5 chain stitches and join them into a ring with 1 slip stitch. Follow the pattern and instructions (diagram A).

Round 1: 1 chain stitch and 11 single crochets around the starting chain, close with 1 slip stitch
round 2: work (3 chain stitches, 2 double crochets) in the first 2 stitches, 3 chain stitches, repeat (3 double crochets in the next 2 stitches, 3 chain stitches) until the end of the round, close with 1 slip stitch. Cut and secure the yarn.

Repeat the same process for the other 53 modules.

For the first half-flower module, with crochet hook size 6 EU / J-10 US, start with 5 chain stitches and join them into a ring with 1 slip stitch. Follow the pattern and instructions (diagram B).

Row 1: 1 chain stitch and 6 single crochets around the starting chain, turn the work
row 2: work (3 chain stitches, 2 double crochets) in the first 2 stitches, 3 chain stitches, skip the next stitch, 3 double crochets in the next stitch, skip the next stitch, 3 double crochets in the last 2 stitches. Cut and secure the yarn.

Repeat the same process for the other 11 half modules.

Assembling the chrocheted flower bag

Follow diagram C to join the modules and make the finishing touches.

Arrange the full and half modules as indicated in diagram C and join them with the crochet hook or yarn needle, aligning the joining points of the petals. Once the modules and half modules are joined, still following diagram C, attach the yarn in the point indicated with a red arrow and the letter A.

Round 1: 7 chain stitches (this equals 1 double crochet and 4 chain stitches), 1 slip stitch at the center of the next half module, 3 chain stitches, 1 double crochet at the petal union below, repeat (3 chain stitches, 1 slip stitch at the center of the next petal, 3 chain stitches, 1 double crochet at the petal union below, 3 chain stitches, 1 slip stitch at the center of the next half module, 3 chain stitches, 1 double crochet at the petal union below) until the last half module below, 3 chain stitches, 1 slip stitch at the center of the next petal, 4 chain stitches, 1 double crochet in the first of the 3 stitches of the next petal (END OF SIDE 1), turn the work to continue on the next side, 4 chain stitches, 1 slip stitch in the next chain arch, 2 chain stitches, 1 double crochet in the last of the 3 stitches of the next petal, 1 chain stitch, 1 triple double crochet at the petal union below, repeat (1 chain stitch, 1 double crochet in the first of the 3 stitches of the next petal, 2 chain stitches, 1 slip stitch in the next chain arch, 2 chain stitches, 1 double crochet in the last of the 3 stitches of the next petal, 1 chain stitch, 1 triple double crochet at the petal union below) until the last petal union, 1 chain stitch, 1 double crochet in the first of the 3 stitches of the next petal, 2 chain stitches, 1 slip stitch in the next chain arch, 4 chain stitches, 1 double crochet in the last of the 3 stitches of the last petal of the side (END OF SIDE 2), turn the work to continue on the next side, 4 chain stitches, 1 triple double crochet at the petal union below, repeat (1 chain stitch, 1 double crochet in the first of the 3 stitches of the next petal, 2 chain stitches, 1 slip stitch in the center of the next chain arch, 2 chain stitches, 1 double crochet in the last of the 3 stitches of the next petal, 1 chain stitch, 1 triple double crochet at the petal union below) until the last module, 4 chain stitches, 1 slip stitch in the 3rd chain of the starting chain (END OF SIDE 4). Do not cut the yarn and with a yarn needle, sew the sides and bottom of the bag using small stitches along the round just worked. Cut and secure the yarn.

For the top edge, still following diagram C, with crochet hook n° 6 EU / J-10 US, attach the yarn in the point indicated with 1 red arrow and the letter B.

Round 1: 3 chain stitches, repeat (1 chain stitch, skip the next stitch, 1 double crochet in the next stitch) until the end of the round, close with 1 slip stitch in the 3rd chain of the starting chain
rounds 2 and 3: 1 chain stitch, 1 single crochet in each stitch below, close with 1 slip stitch in the starting chain stitch. Cut and secure the yarn.

Making the bag handle

For the handle, create a tubular cord as follows: start with 5 chain stitches and join them with 1 slip stitch; work 1 chain stitch and 1 single crochet in the base chain; continue working in single crochet, first in the base chain and then in the single crochets worked previously, proceeding in a spiral. When the cord measures 90 cm / 35.4", or when the desired length is reached, close the round with 1 slip stitch. Do not cut the yarn and, using a yarn needle, attach the handle on the inside, at the side seam. Cut and secure the yarn. Repeat the process to attach the handle on the opposite side.
