For the waistband, starting and ending at the side seam, pick up an even number of stitches along the top edge of the front and back, and work 1/1 ribbing for 24 rows, about 9 cm / 3.5". Bind off. Sew the open side of the waistband using mattress stitch so the seam is invisible.
For the drawstring, using a crochet hook n° 4 EU / G-6 US, chain enough stitches to make a 150 cm / 60" length, then work 1 slip stitch in each chain. Cut and secure the yarn. Insert the drawstring into the waistband as follows: fold the waistband in half inward, mark the center stitch at the front, skip 1 stitch to the right of the marked stitch, insert one end of the drawstring into the next stitch, then pull it out on the opposite side at the same distance. Fold the waistband inward again, including the drawstring, and secure the edges with small stitches.
