How to knit a cardigan with coloured shades

Cardigans are a garment loved by practically everyone, as it saves you the nuisance of having to put on a coat when temperatures start cooling down. It also wraps you up nice and warm under a coat during the coldest of winters.

Today we are going to learn how to make a cardigan with shades in a colour palette that ranges from pink to red. You can wear it over a long dress, preferably tight-fitting, but also over a pair of trousers.

It's easy to make. So all that’s left to do is grab your Favorite needles and get knitting.

The yarn chosen for this project is our soft and warm Fluffy in mohair and silk.

PROCEDURE

The garment is worked flat, it is made up of six parts: back, front right, front left, sleeves, and belt.

How to knit the back of the cardigan with coloured waves

With needles n° 5.5 EU / 9 US and the colour soft fruit combined with 4 strands, cast on 70 stitches and work 12 rows with 1/1 rib.

Now take needles n° 6.5 EU / 10.5 US and knit again with 4 strands of soft fruit colour.

Work in stockinette for a total of 10 rows per colour.

This is the colour sequence you need to follow to get the right colour shade:

1- Soft fruit 4 strands
2- Soft fruit 2 strands + Coral 2 strands
3- Coral 4 strands
4- Coral 2 strands + Orchid 2 strands
5- Orchid 4 heads
6- Orchid 2 strands + Shell 2 strands
7- Shell 4 strands

For the seventh combination, i.e. the 4-strand Shell, you have to work it for 40 rows.

Close the stitches.

How to knit the front of the cardigan with 4 colour shades

Cast on 43 stitches with 4 strands of Soft fruit and size n° 5.5 / 9 US needles.

Row 1: work the first 8 stitches in 1/1 rib, continue for another 35 stitches knitting the entire row
row 2: purl the first 35 stitches, continue working the 8 stitches, as they appear, and purl the last stitch, we do not work, take the thread as it appears and turn over the piece.

Continue working for 12 rows, then continue working in stockinette stitch for 10 rows.

At this point, pick up the sequence of colours that you have already used previously.

When you have worked 60 rows, start with the decline for the V-shaped opening.

How to work the V-shaped opening of the knitted cardigan

We have now reached the part of the V neckline for our knitted cardigan, the instructions are only for the left side, as they will be mirrored for the right side as well.

Work the first 8 stitches in 1/1 rib.

Knit 1 stitch and then a stitch passed over.

These are decreases that must be done every 4 rows, always on the right side, for a total of 10 decreases, both on the back left and right.

Close 24 stitches and continue working rib on the 8+1 stitches, increase at the end of the round, you will need it to sew the neckline on the back of the neck.

Work as stated above for 20 cm / 11.8"

Once the front left is finished, repeat the same procedure for the right side of the cardigan as well.

How to knit the sleeves of the cardigan with coloured waves

Cast on 32 stitches, work 1/1 rib for 16 rows always keeping in mind the gradient scaling of the colours.

Work stockinette making the increases interspersed, i.e. taking the yarn crosswise. At the end of the row, there should be 60 stitches, work 8 rows for each band of colour.

When you get to the colour Shell, work another 22 rows.

Close the stitches.

How to knit the belt of the cardigan

The belt is made of 12 links.

Work in 1/1 rib, that is knit 1 and purl 1.

Keep in mind that the last purl of each row should not be worked. You must work 18 rows for each colour gradient.

Start with 4 strands of soft fruit, and work for 18 rows. Replace 2 strands of soft fruit with 2 strands of coral, and work for another 18 rows.

continue by replacing the 2 strands of soft fruit with 2 other strands of coral, thus having 4 strands of coral with which you will work for 18 rows and so on.

Repeat these steps making sure to follow the colour sequence.

When you have worked 18 rows of Shell 4 strands, continue working in a mirrored way, then restart with another 18 rows of Shell 4 strands and so on.

Finishing the knitted cardigan with shades of colour

Sew the shoulders on with an invisible seam, on the right side of the piece. Sew the sides, possibly with the threads remaining excess from the colour change and match the different colour bands.

Attach the sleeves.

Hide any threads. Do so by taking advantage of the texture of the knitted fabric.

The additional idea? Embroider the cardigan with flowers. We used our yarns and we really like how it turned out. You can also decide to embroider with any leftover yarns you may have. A great way to say no to waste!
