How to crochet a fan stitch multicolor vest

Today's pattern features a classic crochet stitch, the fan stitch. It’s a vest with a modern twist: the neckline and side openings give it a fresh, contemporary look. The yarn chosen for this piece is our Vivienne, airy and breathable thanks to the blend of mohair and printed cotton, making it perfect for all seasons.

Vivienne has unique and unexpected color combinations, just like the inimitable Vivienne Westwood, who inspired its name with her distinctive and colorful style.

The vest has side ties made with an I-cord, and the bottom edge is ribbed, also crocheted. Fun to make and wear, this vest will become a standout piece in your wardrobe.

Thanks to Kate Alinari, crochet designer that created the gilet exclusively for us.

Let’s get started.

INSTRUCTIONS

The vest is worked flat and consists of two pieces: the back, with a horizontally worked border and the remaining part picked up and worked vertically, and the front, worked in the same way. The neckline is worked in the round afterward, after sewing the shoulders. The side edges are also worked afterward.

How to crochet the back of the vest using the fan stitch

For the horizontal ribbed border, using crochet hook size  4 EU / G-6 US, chain 9 and work 64 rows of ribbed single crochet. Fasten off. Turn the border to work along the long edge, and on the right side, join the yarn at the third end of the row at the top right edge.

Row 1: Single crochet in the same end of the row, repeat (Chain 4, 9 triple treble crochets in space between the fourth and fifth row ends, chain 4, single crochet between the fourth and fifth row ends) 7 times, turn without working the last row ends
row 2: Chain 5 and triple treble crochet in first stitch, repeat (Chain 4, single crochet in the center of the next group of 9 triple treble crochets, chain 4, 2 triple treble crochets in next single crochet) to end of row
row 3: Chain 1, repeat (Chain 4, 9 triple treble crochets in next single crochet, chain 4, single crochet between the next 2 triple treble crochets) to end of row
row 4: Chain 5 and triple treble crochet in first stitch, repeat (Chain 4, single crochet in the center of the next group of 9 triple treble crochets, chain 4, 2 triple treble crochets in next single crochet) to end of row.

Rows 3 and 4 set the fan stitch pattern; repeat them 5 more times: you’ll reach row 14, which is 25 cm / 9.8" from the border.

Row 15: Slip stitch in each stitch and chain to the second pair of triple treble crochets, single crochet between these 2 stitches, repeat (Chain 4, 9 triple treble crochets in next single crochet, chain 4, single crochet between the next 2 triple treble crochets) 5 times, turn without working the remaining stitches.

Decrease 1 motif at the beginning and 1 motif at the end of the row for the armholes, leaving 5 motifs. Continue with the fan stitch, repeating rows 4 and 3 five more times, then work row 4 once more: you’ll reach row 26, which is 46.5 cm / 18.3" from the border.

Row 27: Chain 5, 9 triple treble crochets in next single crochet, chain 4, single crochet between the next 2 triple treble crochets, turn without working the remaining stitches. Continue working only on this side for the shoulder
row 28: Chain 5 and triple treble crochet in first stitch, chain 4, single crochet in the center of the next group of 9 triple treble crochets, chain 4, 2 triple treble crochets in last single crochet
row 29: Chain 3, work 1 double crochet in each stitch and chain to end of row
row 30: Chain 3, work 1 double crochet in each of the next 5 stitches and slip stitch in each remaining stitch to end of row.

Fasten off.

Skip the 3 central motifs for the neckline, and with crochet hook size  4 EU / G-6 US, join yarn between the 2 triple treble crochets at the third skipped motif for the neckline. Work the second side like the first but mirrored. Fasten off.

Front of the crocheted vest

Work the front exactly as you did for the back.

Finishing the crocheted vest using the fan stitch

Sew the shoulders. For the edge of the entire right side of the vest (side, underarm, and armhole of both front and back), with crochet hook size  4 EU / G-6 US, join yarn at the first fan stitch row end of the front side, and working along the entire edge to the opposite point, work 1 row of double crochet evenly along the front side, underarm curve, front armhole, shoulder seam, back armhole, underarm curve, and back side, then slip stitch to the free row end of the bottom edge of the back. Remember to add extra stitches at the underarm curve to round the corner and avoid tightening. Continue with 2 more rows of ribbed single crochet, slip stitching to the free row end of the bottom edge at the end of each row. Fasten off. Work the left side edge the same way. For the neckline, with crochet hook size  4 EU / G-6 US, join yarn at the shoulder seam and work 1 round of 77 double crochets evenly around the neckline, slip stitch to join. Work 7 rounds of double crochet in the round, then fasten off. For each of the 4 side ties, make a tubular cord as follows: Chain 5 and slip stitch to join into a ring; chain 1 and single crochet in the ring; continue single crocheting in the ring in a spiral. When the cord measures 30 cm / 12", or reaches your desired length, slip stitch to close the round, then fasten off. Sew each tie to the inside of each side corner, then tie the front and back ties in a bow to close the sides.
